Description

Precision Engineering. Radical Innovation. Timeless Design. The Monster

Don't be misled by the name, The Monster is not an oversized fountain pen. It’s a thoughtfully crafted writing instrument, inspired by the classic Gravitas Vac silhouette and refined with modern engineering. Every curve, every proportion has been carefully considered to create a fountain pen that feels bold yet perfectly balanced in the hand.

Disclaimer ! - the combination of the sleek finish and the lack of the clip makes this pen to easy roll off the table/desk or slip off the pocket while in carry, the result of such unfortunate events can be a pen barrel cracked and/or split where the clear acrylic meets the aluminium section threads. Such unfortunate accidents are not covered by warranty !

Machined from solid Grade 5 Titanium and paired with an Ultem barrel, the Monster delivers a writing experience that is both substantial and effortless. Its weight have been optimised and increased from the Aluminium version, offering a solid feeling and comfort without compromise. The Machined finish is obtained by a precision "one pass" process on the lathe - leaving the exposed raw metal to be shiny just like it's polished. The cap is featuring a inner Delrin sleeve which allows for a smooth posting and a smooth feel in capping and uncapping - aiding in the sealing of the nib inside the cap.

At the core of The Monster lies the Kraken Filling System, a revolutionary filling mechanism born from a surprising source: medical device research. While developing retractable pens,  Ben Walsh the lead designer of Gravitas explored shut-off valves and sealing solutions used in mechanical devices - heart valves. The result? A precision-engineered system that offers reliable and efficient operation, vacuum integrity and a unique tactile experience that sets it apart from traditional vacumatic filling systems.

When installed in The Monster - Kraken Filling System brings a huge ink volume of 7ml of ink at full load (full Namiki Emperor ink load - 6ml ink) and an outstanding vacuum integrity due to the use of specialised quad ring* (*a two contact point square ring which maintains a lubricant in between contact points ensuring constant lubricant delivery each time when used) translating in a efficient suction of ink with even one plunge.

The writing point of The Monster is a steel size 8 nib paired with an ebonite feeder - available in 4 sizes : Extra Fine, Fine, Medium and Broad.

Monster is more than a writing instrument. It’s innovation you can feel, in every detail, every line, every word you write.

An Amazing Pen

A vacuum filler pen with the ink capacity of an eyedropper filler!
I like pens with large ink reservoirs, because more is better, especially if I'm away from my ink stash. Eyedropper fillers offer the highest ink capacity, but...if you don't have a way to shut off ink flow between reservoir and nib unit, you run into "burping" issues, which can get very messy, especially if you can't see if there's ink in the cap. The solution was either a vac filler, or a "Japanese eyedropper", both of which have a plug attached to a rod that can be screwed into the opening between ink chamber and nib unit, sealing it off. My Opus 88 and Visconti Homo Sapiens have a total ink capacity of around 3.5ml. The Monster G5 has an ink capacity of 7ml. That's like 10 Standard International Short cartridges! That means most casual users might fill their Monster 2-3 times per year. Using a Fine nib, one complete fill lets you write 450 A4 pages, or about 54,000 words. Hopefully, you REALLY LOVE the ink you filled it with, because you'll be looking at that ink for a long, long time!
But not only is the ink capacity huge, the pen itself is pretty amazing, as well. The Kraken filling system, a clever variety of a vac filler system (with an improved shut off valve) that prioritizes ink capacity, is virtually unparalleled in modern pens currently on the market. The Ultem (or clear Acrylic) body of the pen is polished to crystal clarity, the metal is highly corrosion resistant titanium, and the #8 steel nib is smooth as glass.
I'm cheap, and boring, so I do most of my fountain pen writing on plain copier paper, which allows the ink to spread out, letting a Fine nib make a line like a Medium nib. I also like to use Pelikan 4001 Königsblau, because I got a good deal on the 1,000ml bottle of ink from my favorite online seller. The combination of cheap(er) paper and ink pairs really well with the Monster's #8 nib and feed; my Fine nib makes a line comparable to a Japanese Medium nib, while keeping the color richly saturated. Using standard European 5mm quad ruled paper, the nib writes thin enough to be perfectly legible. I do have to write a bit slower, though, because the generous ink flow also means longer drying times, and writing too quickly can cause smearing issue. That's a me-problem, not a pen-problem.
The nib itself is stiff, but very smooth, meeting or exceeding the smoothness of all of my JoWo #6 steel nibs. In my opinion, the combination of nib and feed make this one of the best general purpose pens you can buy, because it will work reliably on a wide variety of paper, and a wide variety of inks. As with all demonstrator type pens, avoid "high maintenance" inks, like permanent/document/waterproof inks (and Baystate Blue), because unless you're a professional writer/author, that ink is going to stay in your pen for at least a month, and your pretty clear tank may become stained permanently.

Just amazing!

From the moment I unboxed the pen till now (a week into it) I haven't been able to put it down and neither has the open shown any signs of being overworked or thrown any tantrums. I did a partial fill of the pen with just a single pump of the kraken filling system and to be honest, I am afraid to do a full fill! I have used it for work, for miscellaneous writing and journaling and the ink level has barely moved. The whole one feels like it will outlast an apocalypse and document it well and perhaps without requiring another fill until the apocalypse ends

Titanium winner

The titanium version of the Monster is a perfectly balanced writer; the aluminum version just felt a little light to me. The nib and feed are perfect and the filling system is super cool. My only issue lies with the finishing on the cap. There's a lot of glue residue on the inside, and around the edges. I've been scraping it off slowly with my fingernail (and I just don't look inside the cap), but it's a little disappointing to see this blemish on such an expensive pen. Otherwise, I'm very happy to have this upgrade.

Impressive Pen

I received the Gravitas Monster G5 Titanium pen with a medium steel nib and have been writing with it for a few days. This pen is very well designed, it certainly has some heft to it due to the titanium material, and wrote straight out of the box with the preferred line width and wetness - I like my pens to be a bit on the juicy side, and this nib and pen design did not disappoint. My preference are gold nibs on fountain pens for their ability to provide flexibility, but am really impressed with the way the steel #8 nib writes on this pen despite its hardness. The ink volume is also impressive, it took 2 attempts to fill the reservoir with ink, much more than standard cartridge or piston systems, and almost equal to an eye dropper system. It will definitely be added to my pen rotation and looking forward to experiment on different ink colours. I guess from the Gravitas pen lineup this pen is considered a monster, however, it is a bit shy in comparison to other pens in my collection specifically the Danitrio's that can demand that title. The pen holder case that came with the pen is very useful not only to store the pen but also a pen case that fits in a brief case when travelling. Thanks to Pen Venture in getting this impressive pen to me in a timely manner. I'd like to try a broad nib on this pen when they are available as well. So far very pleased with the overall pen, that will be shared with my fountain pen colleagues!

Love this ink!

It is a beuatiful color and seems to work well in the pens I have tried out. No issues, and it has the waterproof qualities I was looking for.

Diamine - Desert Rose | Exclusive Pen Venture | - Bottled Ink 80 ml
Garo

Desert Rose is a beautiful, elegant ink with a soft dusty rose color that stands out from the typical reds and purples. I currently have it inked in my Laban, and it’s a perfect match. The ink has excellent flow, looks sophisticated on the page, and gives the pen a unique personality. It’s a color that always catches my eye when I flip through my notebook.

Diamine - Neptune Blue | Exclusive Pen Venture | - Bottled Ink 80 ml
Garo

A beautiful saturated blue that strikes a great balance between professional and vibrant. It has excellent flow, good lubrication, and behaves well on quality paper. If you enjoy rich blue inks without venturing into teal territory, this is a fantastic exclusive.

Gravitas - Vac 2.0 Filing System Tool
Garo

Simple but worth having. It makes maintenance much easier and fits the Vac 2.0 perfectly. It’s one of those accessories you may not use often, but when you need to disassemble the pen for cleaning or servicing you’ll be glad you have it.

If the Monster and the Vac 1.0 had a Love Child...

...this would be it! To be completely honest, the Monster's DNA is clearly the dominant factor in this creation! As a matter of fact, it might be more accurate to call this pen the Baby Monster, instead of "Vac 2.0". There are only a few characteristics of the Vac 1.0 that were passed on, such as having an Ultem ink window on the secondary ink reservoir. Speaking of which, shouldn't the "Primary" ink reservoir be the one that connects directly to the nib unit? The back up, or reserve reservoir should be the "Secondary" reservoir, since it feeds the primary reservoir, not the nib unit, but...whatever. Other characteristics inherited from the Vac 1.0 are the conical finials on the cap and barrel, as well as a #6 size nib. Ink capacity of the Vac 2.0 is more than the Vac 1.0, but less than the Monster; at 4.5 ml, it's more than enough to get you through an all night session of writing, maybe even all week!
The nib...unlike other Gravitas nibs, doesn't have a breather hole, and the slit is longer. The metal also may be thinner than other Gravitas #6 nibs, which in combination with the longer slit, may give this nib a bit more flexibility. My nib is very smooth! Ink flow is a little bit less than the Monster's, but more than the Vac 1.0's, and is consistent and predictable with Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue ink.
Fun fact: the ink uptake hole (where ink goes into the pen when you fill it) is located on the underside of the feed, pretty close to where the feed disappears into the grip section. It's like that with almost every fountain pen that's designed to suck ink out of an ink well/bottle. The only one I know of that has the hole way forward toward the tip of the nib is the Lamy 2000. How does that affect you? The farther the nib sticks out from the grip section, the higher up that hole sits from the nib's tip, and the more ink needs to be in the bottom of the ink well to make sure that the pen sucks up ink, not air. The #6 nib sticks out about 7/8" (22mm), the #8 nib (of the Monster) sticks out about 17/16" (27mm). So, unless you plan on transferring your favorite ink into tall, thin ink bottles (like Robert Oster ink bottles), use an ink miser or ink sample bottle, or get creative with an ink syringe, the smaller sized nib of the Vac 2.0 allows you to get more ink out of your bottle before the rest becomes unreachable. With a little patience, practice, and an ample supply of paper towels, you can fill almost any piston filler or vac filler with an ink syringe as if the pen was an eyedropper filler, as long as you can remove the grip section and squirt the ink directly into the barrel. Some pens won't let you remove the grip section, but you can unscrew the nib unit, which will also give you direct access to the ink chamber(s). Vac fillers are more difficult to fill like that, because the piston has to be pushed all the way forward, and then retracted just far enough to allow ink to flow around and behind the piston to fill the ink chamber. If you were to fill it with the piston all the way in the back, you'd just expel all of the ink as soon as you push the piston forward again.
I love that Vac 2.0 has a second ink window, which lets me know when I need to open up the big ink chamber to allow ink to fill the little in chamber. I love the smaller nib, which allows me to better access to ink in bottles that are less than half full. I love how smooth the nib writes, and that the line width is actually pretty close to the nominal "Fine" standard (0.3mm, +/- 0.1mm). I love that the cap and pen body are now mated with titanium threaded parts, with ACME threads, so there isn't the constant feeling of cross threading the Ultem plastic, like every time I put the cap back on my Vac 1.0. I'm still careful whenever I screw the cap on any of my pens, regardless of material or brand, but I'm extra careful with threads on my non metal pens.
So, if like the Vac 1.0, you're going to love Vac 2.0, because I believe all of the Vac 1.0's shortcomings were addressed. If you thought you might like the Monster, but thought it's too big or pricey for you, the Vac 2.0 is the perfect fit. Still more ink capacity than most fountain pens, including many dedicated eyedropper pens, yet almost the same size as a regular full size pen. Robust construction, high quality materials, flawless fit and finish.
