Gravitas - Sentry Ultem

I love pens designed around the JoWo #6 nib unit. Ideal size, a virtually “open source” design meaning that most parts of this pen responsible for putting ink to paper are interchangeable with almost every other pen designed around the JoWo #6 nib unit. The Sentry does this very well, even without a genuine JoWo #6 nib. In my opinion, these Gravitas nibs are as good as, or even better than any genuine JoWo #6 steel nib, including ink flow.
The Ultem Sentry is engineered to last, the same as the metal Sentry pens. Yes, the metal grip section is heavier than the rest of the pen body, and yes, that moves the center of mass closer to the nib. However, this is a fountain pen, not a World GP Racing Motorcycle, or a trick throwing knife. Perfect balance between front and back isn’t a requirement for a pen to be an excellent writing instrument. The only place where perfect balance is a must-have is a submarine, and, again, this is a fountain pen.
The ONLY less-than-perfect part of this pen are the threads holding the cap on the body. My pen has a tendency to want to cross-thread, so I had to adjust my capping procedure: go easy and slow, and if it feels like it’s cross-threading, back up one or two clicks and try again. Ultem is plastic, and forcing the threads will damage them, which will lead to the nib unit drying out, and it just goes downhill from there.

I recently purchased a Gravitas Sentry Ultem from Pen Venture, and overall, I’m very pleased with the pen. It’s a solid, well-crafted piece that performs beautifully for both writing and drawing. My only criticism is that the section feels disproportionately heavy compared to the rest of the pen. However, with a bit of adjustment, I’ve adapted, and it hasn’t hindered my enjoyment or usability.

Pen Venture’s service, as always, was outstanding. Shipping was fast and efficient, and the thoughtful note from Emy added a personal touch that made the experience even more enjoyable.

All in all, despite the slight imbalance in the pen’s design, I’m very happy with my purchase, and Pen Venture continues to be a reliable and customer-focused vendor for quality writing instruments.

I am a little obsessed with ultem right now and this is a great pen to use it on, the sentry model is a great size in the hand and the black section and nib are a lovely contrast. Very comfortable writer, smooth as butter broad nib and a convertor included! What's not to love! Ordering from Pen Venture is a lovely experience, from the swift and pleasant comunication to the no nonsense delivery, including a hand written note. It's a wonderful business to deal with.
