Description

Born from a collaborative effort from Kyuseido and Ben Walsh Design, the Kyuseido - Kakari FS features the innovative Pump Piston Filler integrated filling system. Unmatched attention to detail defines the Kyuseido Kakari FS. The pen body is made with optical grade cast acrylic, chosen for its remarkable clarity and beautiful polish, and internally fit with 303 stainless steel piston unit and rod that forms the Pump Piston Filler.

The cap, section, and piston knob are made from Ti-6Al-4V and finished with a high Ra finish directly on a Swiss lathe. The internal lining in both the cap and the piston knob are made from Delrin(r) acetal homopolymer, which ensures the smooth sensation when capping and uncapping the pen.

The piston rod features a valve system which blocks off the main ink chamber of the barrel from the nib and feed of the pen and can minimize potential leakage when traveling. To allow unrestricted ink flow from the barrel into the feed, unscrew the piston knob until the piston rod can move freely before writing.

Kyuseido worked with Ben Walsh Design to create two special finishes, only available through Gravitas Pens, to commemorate the release of this pen. The Kyuseido Kakari FS Gravitas Pens Special Edition comes in matte blue or machine polished blue.

These Gravitas Pens Special Editions will feature 14k yellow gold nibs fit on an ebonite feed made from black Nikko ebonite and adorned with the distinctive Gravitas Pens logo. The premium and durable AM tipping is specially formulated for high performance.

Please note that the nib sizes for the Gravitas Pens Special Editions write larger in size than the nibs from Kyuseido. Additionally, the Gravitas Pens nibs and feeds are set further into the housing than those from Kyuseido.

While it is possible to remove the section and to disassemble the Kyuseido Kakari FS, any disassembly is “at the user’s risk” and damage caused due to disassembly is not covered by the Kyuseido International Warranty.

The Kyuseido Kakari FS is a robust pen built to last. However, it is not designed to be indestructible. Damage caused due to dropping the pen, handling with excess force, and other external factors beyond regular writing and operation can be repaired outside of the Kyuseido International Warranty for a fee.

The Kyuseido Kakari is available in machine finish (shiny) only.

Incredibly smooth.

I have a relatively small collection of fountain pens and had finally decided to get one with a gold nib. No matter how many different pens I looked at, I found myself coming back to this one time and time again. So I decided to go ahead and get myself a Kakari.

The one word that really ties everything together is smooth. From the finish to the threads and filling system to the absolutely wonderful nib, it's even better than I had hoped for. I opted for the Medium nib and it is a pleasure to write with.

This is also my first Gravitas pen, and it's every bit as amazing as I had expected from all of the reviews I had seen. Thank you to everyone at Gravitas and Pen Venture for such a wonderful writing instrument.

Finally an introduction

I started using fountain pens earlier this year to commemorate a promotion to a new station. Only upon receiving this pen hours ago and putting nib to page do I realize that I haven't experienced fountain pens until today. I've been researching and admiring this pen since August, and from its substantial weight, level of feedback, and build quality to its unique filling mechanism, it shattered my expectations.

I regret only that I did not decide to buy this pen earlier.

Kudos to Ben Walsh, Cy, and Emy for the utterly fantastic quality and tuning of this instrument. For anyone considering this pen, there is no reason to hesitate. It seems I'm now one of many who are happy to have trusted Emy and the Pen Venture team!

Wonderful nib on Kakari

I find the most wondrous things about the matte blue is the exceptionally smooth, and also wet nib that I asked Emy to tune. The F nib writes like an excellent medium nib - just the way I like. The matte blue finish is lovely, and the excellent construction and "feel" to the pen are terrific. But to me what makes this pen more exceptional than the Monster pens (which I also have), plus the Titan, is the lovely nib. I wish Emy and Ben would offer this nib on some of their other pens, even if a number 6 rather than an 8 on the Monster (and Titan pens).

Tuned to Perfection

To keep it short - any high end pen I plan to get in the future I’ll look here first because the nib tuning/ check before shipment is the best I’ve experienced.

Yet another wonderful and beautiful Gravitas pen!

After multiple carbon fiber (piston black, dinky, pocket) I had my eyes on this Kakari. Knowing that Emy would take the best care and possibly even personal tune the pen if I’m lucky I pulled the plug. And I am so happy with this absolutely gorgeous pen. The build and finish (I got the satin finish) were impeccable - and sturdy. Knowing the size ran bigger for this pen nib, I still went for the B and its writes just as juicy as I had hope it would. I personally love juicy pens and ink shading, so I am overjoyed with the performance. And I can’t stop admiring the craftsmanship of this (and other Gravitas) pen. I’m in love with this pen…it looks so gorgeous all inked up (I used Sailor Shikiori Yuki-Usagi, snow rabbit - a dark blue/gray shading). Thank you Emy and Penventure for yet another wonderfully satisfying purchase!

Another Great Gravitas Pen

I ordered this pen even though I’ve had some issues with two of my six Monster pens—which amounts to a failure rate of nearly 30%. One of my Monsters (black aluminum) suddenly started leaking after three months of regular use (with Artisan Pastellier Rose Cyclamen ink; it still leaks in small amounts, even though I haven’t used that ink in it for months and am now using the fountain pen with GvFC Viper Green; otherwise, the pen works reliably). Unfortunately, two service requests regarding this issue went unanswered.

The other one (TiSinX titanium) is now, unfortunately, completely unusable, as every time I fill it, large amounts of ink immediately ooze out in thick drops from the same spot (though this could be due to using Diamone Desert Rose—I didn’t initially know that such inks might cause problems). I may contact Pen Venture at a later date regarding the purchase of a replacement ink reservoir (if possible with Ultem).

I haven’t had any problems so far with the Ultem Monsters or the Gravitas Exclusive Rainbow Skittle Monster.

The Vac 2.0, which is what this review was actually supposed to be about, is another great pen. Unfortunately, the Diamine Lady Grey ink I bought along with it seems much too dry for this pen, so I screwed in the gold nib from my Gravitas x Kyuseido Kakari, and now it writes like a dream; ironically, the original nib now writes just as beautifully in my Ultemate Vac - so I guess I have to review the new steel nib separately.

The Kraken filling mechanism works extremely well again and feels almost a bit more powerful in this pen than it does in the Monster; and the new ink window is a joy as well.

It's extremely well balanced and although I very much enjoy the girthier (and heavier) monster, fast note taking is kind of more comfortable with this pen—although, purely for aesthetic reasons, I actually like the flat ends of the Monster a little better.

However, there’s a minor flaw (which definitely isn’t due to the new gold nib, since it also occurred with the original nib) that happens when the ink reservoir is full and you screw the Kraken mechanism shut. Sometimes a large drop falls onto the paper then, but I suspect this can be prevented by simply not letting the reservoir get completely full.

That aside, the pen is a pure delight.

The broad nib I orderd it with is pure delight as well. It's nicely soft and writes very consistently with my (fairly standard, I guess) 50° writing angle. The line width is very consistent, which is a nice experience, given that many broad nibs these days have stub-like characteristics. Interestingly, this nib has this kind of character when using it in reverse for very, very small margin notes—something I haven't come across before with round-ground nibs. I kind of like it.

All in all another great and beautifully designed pen - but only time will tell if it's prone to the same problems as some of the Monsters.

The ordering process and shipment was smooth and seamless as always with pen venture and I received my ordering within just a few days. Emy added a kind handwritten note, a Monster maintenance tool and vial of silicon oil.

That creates a kind of personal shopping experience—which is something, also given that the store appears to be expanding quite rapidly.

What a beauty

I received this wonderful pen in Australia today . I can’t describe how pleased I am with the pen and the service of Pen Venture .
I had been searching for this particular pen after the manufacturer told me that it was sold out and this particular colour would not be repeated .
It arrived so much quicker than expected in excellent condition and securely parcelled.

Fifty 4T Titan Ultem - First Impressions

Emy has just sent me the 50/40 Titan Ultem. It’s a very well balanced pen made from a variety of rugged materials. This pen will outlast me, safe to say. The first and continuing impression the pen gives is its superb machining. The fit and finish is of the highest order comparable to artisanal products made in limited numbers by engineer-designers: like musical instruments, pocket knives, tobacco pipes and wristwatches. There is no feature or detail in this pen that distracts from my pleasure in using it. I respond to the common critiques of the 50/40 in the following way: (1) There is no clip. This is true. That this is a shortcoming is not true. I don’t need a clip. My writing surface is flat so it doesn’t roll off and the pen never leaves the studio so I don’t put it in my shirt pocket. (2) The Ultem material is the color of urine. I don’t see it that way. It’s transparent canary and provides a lively contrast to the titanium. If you prefer, the clear and smoked options are also available.(3) The nib should be gold. I disagree. This steel nib is comparable to premium Swedish surgical steel. There’s nuance and flexibility in its response. And the discrete etched logo is the only product marking on the entire pen (with the exception of the pen number out of a series of 250 at the bottom of the cap). (4) It’s too expense. That is an opinion not an argument. I had no problem paying the €640.

Beautiful pocket pen.

I’m really happy with this pen. The machining on the body is really nice and the tactility of the grip is amazing. It also looks lovely.
If I had any criticism it would be that the cap doesn’t post as securely as some pocket pens but once you get used to it is perfectly useable and doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the pen.
