Nib:
The extra-fine nib was dry and scratchy out of the box, requiring tine alignment and polishing to achieve smoothness. At this price, nibs should come pre-tuned; otherwise, buyers may need a nibmeister’s help.
Feed:
The ebonite feed initially caused ink flow issues ("burping") and required heat-setting. Its brittle fins broke with minimal handling, indicating a design flaw. Removing it needs caution, as no direct replacements are offered by Gravitas.
Design:
The carbon fiber finish is sleek and well-balanced, ideal for longer writing sessions, though the narrow section may not suit everyone. The o-ring cap prevents ink from drying out, making it practical for daily use. With adjustments, the ink flow works well on varied paper quality.
Price:
Given the adjustments required, the pen feels overpriced; $120 would be more reasonable. The ebonite feed, though a nice touch, may be unnecessary for a pocket pen, where a red plastic feed would suffice.
Final Thoughts:
While the design is striking, quality control on the nib could be improved. Pen Venture could consider adding nib tuning and retipping as a service, though this would warrant a lower initial price to balance costs for users.
The feel of this pen is so smoth. The nib is amazing. I will say a Gravitas nib always is a wet writer which I love. I did move up on notch from a fine point to an extra fine and love it. I have an aluminum pocket pen from Gravitas which also is one of my favorites, however, I would choose a finer point than you usually order because the nibs to run wet. I love the red feeder. I love this pen.
I was attracted to the use of carbon in a new way, and I wanted something I could carry with me all the time. My only concern is that the medium nib is very nice but flows more than any other medium nib I have. Perhaps I should have gone with Fine or UltraFine.
My first Gravitas fountain pen impresses me all around. I love this size, and I actually carry it with me all the time. The black/red combination looks simply beautiful. The ebonite feed and, above all, the exceptional material make this writing instrument something truly special.
I find it very nice that the converter is included. This gives it access to my entire ink collection. In direct comparison to the short Kaweco converter, I find the one provided to be of higher quality and more practical.
I bought this pen after seeing the review - the pen was everything Emy stated it to be. Absolutely beautiful to write with and stunning to hold in the hand. I bought this pen online on the 6th Oct and it arrived to my address in Australia by the 11th Oct! Australia Post should take some notes on Pen Venture's delivery service..... I've already put another order in - you have a long term customer here Pen Venture!
